Custom Leather Journals Most Popular Customization Options
We are often asked what the most popular options are for our custom leather journals. We do track this data, and it changes from time to time. Currently, the most popular customization options for our custom leather journals are:

- For customers who want a centered or full cover design, the most popular style is a “dead heat” between

- To refill or not to refill? Most popular custom leather journal type:
- Again, this really depends on the customer….
- Refillable custom leather journals are most popular with customers who are consumate journallers that are not journaling for a specific person or purpose.
- Standard/permanently bound custom leather journals are most popular with customers who are writing their memoirs, writing words of wisdom to their children, or are otherwise chronicling important moments, thoughts, and times.
- Again, this really depends on the customer….
- Most popular Custom leather journal size: 8″ x 10″ (large)
- This customization option for our custom leather journals seems to change on occassion. In 2006, the most popular size for our custom leather journals was 6″ x 9″, however, around Christmas of 2006, that moved to the 8″ x 10″ size. The 8″ x 10″ custom leather journal size has remained a favorite of our customers since then, with a very wide lead over all other sizes.
- We suspect that there are a few reasons for the large size custom leather journals current standing as the overwhelming favorite. First, the page size (9.5″ x 7.5″), is just a really nice size for any size hand to write in. The small custom leather journal pages seem to be less comfortable for writing (even the smallest hand “falls off” the bottom of the page by the half way mark), and the medium custom leather journal pages are just-enough smaller than the large pages to make the large pages much more comfortable to write on.
- Our personal/professional recommendation on custom leather journal size is:
- If you are using your custom leather journal for daily writing and not travelling extensively, the best size is the 8″ x 10″ size.
- If you are travelling and would like to journal your travel experiences in your custom leather journal, the best size is the 6″ x 9″ custom leather journal size - it’s more “suitcase” friendly (especially when you are trying to keep luggage to a minimum!)
- If you do most of your journalling in the same area every day, and not planning on carrying your custom leather journal throughout the day, the 9″ x 12″ size is simply wonderful for you! Personally, I have used all the available sizes of our custom leather journals, and absolutely love my 9″ x 12″ size for evening journaling. It looks quite stately on my desk, and I feel royal as I pull it toward me to write in the evenings. One of my 9″ x 12″ journals has blank pages that I use for sketching and other artist endeavors - when I fill one, I will lay it on the coffee table, and it makes a great conversation piece!
- For my “workhorse” custom leather journal, however, I always go back to my 8″ x 10″ journal. It’s like my portable idea center and it goes with me everywhere. It’s a better size for the portable/on the go custom leather journal than the 9″ x 12″ custom leather journal.
- Most Popular Custom leather journal color: By overwhelming choice, the “weathered” color is the most ordered and reordered color for our custom leather journals. This “color” (which is actually a layered combination of several dyes) reminds most customers of a worn/broke-in saddle…It’s rich and interesting to look at, and just gives you that great “feel” of an antique or “well weathered” custom leather journal. Not only does the weathered coloring look great the first day you get your custom leather journal, it ages and looks even more beautiful the more you use it!
- Most popular cover personalization and customization options:
- Our most often requested cover personalization for our custom leather journals is a first name, nickname, or monogram. The second most popular cover personalization request is for a short saying, and the third most popular cover personalization request for our custom leather journals is a full name. These three options, in popularity terms, are very close as this is really a personal preference for our customers, which is why we chose to list the top 3, rather than the first choice alone.
- Our most popular customization option is a small design in the lower left corner (above the personalization), followed closely by a full cover or centered pictorial-type customization.
- Most Popular Custom Leather Journal Page options: This is a trickier option to categorize for our most popular list. Our orders don’t show a preference for lined pages over unlined pages or vice-versa. However, here are some guidelines that we use for our recommendations, and our customers seem to agree with:
- Choose UNLINED pages for your custom leather journal if you are going to use your journal mostly to doodle, sketch, or for more artistic endeavors.
- Choose LINED pages for your custom leather journal if you are a “type A” personality (and don’t like looking at your journal pages and finding that you angled up or down when writing), if you are writing extensively, or if you are going to use your custom leather journal as a guest book/memory-type book.
- With the LINED pages, we can use a very light grey line if you want “barely there” lines to guide you when you are writing. Just note that preference when you are choosing your page options.
- We can ALSO do a combination of lined and unlined pages, if you like to doodle/draw AND write in the same journal. Just note that preference when you are choosing your page options, and we will contact you for more information.
